Shipley, Al (December 19, 2017). "N.E.R.D are weighed down by their famous friends on No_One Ever Really Dies". Fact . Retrieved December 20, 2017. The performances from Pharrell and Shay are both great. Sure, Pharrell's singing has that occasional moment where it stumbles a bit, but his verses are great, and when his singing is good, he stands well on his own as a singer, with Shay also getting a few great rap verses in there to prove himself as a valuable member of the group, which tends to be debated amongst N*E*R*D fans. There's also some great guest performances throughout the album. Lee Harvey has a great guest verse on "Lapdance", with a memorable and catchy hook done in part from Vita to boot. Kelis and Pusha T both have great parts on "Truth or Dare", and Malice has a good guest verse on "Am I High"

He likes the original version,” Chad explains with a laugh. “He likes the electronic version better.” Pharrell had the Lexus at the time and we would just vibe out, man. And we would go to the clubs once in a while. But we wanted to do our own thing outside the clubs,” he says. “We made music for the clubs as the Neptunes, but I think we were just making stuff that was another dimension. We tried to make another world with N.E.R.D. The experience was all experimental as far as we were just making music, having fun. Enjoying each other’s company, making music at the same time and making interesting records that people hadn’t heard of.” a b Pappademas, Alex (April 2002). "Playing With Your Mind". Spin. [16] [21] The first single, " She Wants to Move", has gone top 5 in the United Kingdom, top 20 in Norway, Ireland, and Denmark, and top 40 in Australia and the Netherlands. The music videos for "She Wants to Move" and its follow-up single, " Maybe", have received strong support from the digital cable network VH1 Soul in America. The Neptunes met at the age of 12 at a band class in Virginia Beach. [7] [8] Hugo was the Drum Major for the Kempsville High School Marching Chiefs, under the direction of current University of Virginia Band Director, William Pease, while Pharrell was a drumline member of the (FMC) The Fabulous Marching Cavaliers of Princess Anne High School, both of Virginia Beach, Virginia. [ citation needed] They spent their free time making beats and performing in groups with fellow childhood friend Timbaland. The Neptunes met Shay Haley in high school and began performing together. The trio often met in Hugo's garage, where he beatboxed through a speaker system while Haley danced. [9] After watching the duo perform at a high school talent show, Teddy Riley, a musician and producer, signed Williams and Hugo in 1992. [8] After producing songs for several artists throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, the production duo formed N.E.R.D in 1999 as a side project known for their appearance on Ghetto Children off Kelis' debut Kaleidoscope. Paige adds that while their third album in 2008’s Seeing Sounds influenced his life on a deeper level than In Search Of…, “N.E.R.D. is a perfect example of freedom of expression and so much more beyond that, and I can’t really put any of their albums in a genre, and I don’t want to.” Praxis Media. Retrieved 2011-08-27.That original version (dubbed the “electronic version”) was already seven months old this week in 2002, when Hugo and Pharrell Williams, who made up the legendary production duo The Neptunes, joined forces with childhood friend Shae Haley to finally release their debut album in the U.S. via their own Star Trak Entertainment and Virgin Records. The updated March 11 release was as defiant as it gets from a pair of guys who were known at the time for producing some of the most interstellar hip-hop and pop hits on airwaves. They learned to play the songs live, as Chad Hugo told MTV News on December 9, 2003: "We're the ones playing the instruments live this time. I just started playing guitar last year so I'm learning as we go. Pharrell's playing drums. [Last time] we didn't have time to learn certain instruments so we got Spymob to help us out." [19] Even with their outsized influence on hip-hop, N*E*R*D didn’t make Pharrell Williams a household name. Along with his solo career, Pharrell is famous for being one half of the prolific production duo The Neptunes, along with Chad Hugo, who prefers a lower-key approach to public life. When the duo decided to start a side-project, in 1991, they recruited childhood friend Sheldon “Shay” Haley to join their futuristic collective, N*E*R*D (No-One Ever Really Dies).

And at the end of my call with Hugo, I ask him a pretty standard question, to get a gist of just how much the project resonates with him still. I asked Chad what In Search Of... means to him today. At the time, Fawcett didn’t know too much about Pharrell outside of him being the “I’m a hustler, baby” guy, but Pharrell knew a hell of a lot about Spymob. After their six-song 1998 demo that somehow wound up in the superstar producers’ hands, Hugo recalls that N.E.R.D. felt Spymob was “on a different level chord wise.” Kot, Greg (June 10, 2002). The conversation surrounded the only album he’s ever made with two versions, In Search Of…, and which version his son preferred. By the tone of his voice, it seems Hugo’s son didn’t give him the answer he, himself, was quite searching for.
